Interview with Marco Ciaponi

Dear Marco, first of all, our regular question. Could you share some advice with our readers…What opera would you recommend for a first-time opera experience? Which one is best for a romantic date? And what would be a good choice for a family visit, with parents, for example?

What a great question! Then I would definitely say my first operatic experience was not ideal: it had a charming plot, beautiful music, and many familiar motifs. For a first date, I would recommend Puccini’s wonderful La Bohème — it’s classic and romantic. For a family outing, I’d say The Florentine Straw Hat is entertaining and moves along quickly.

What is your favourite role that you’ve performed so far, and what makes it particularly special for you?

My favorite vocal role is definitely Elvino, because of the wonderful music Bellini wrote, the impetuous development of jealousy, and the beautiful phrases the composer reserved for the tenor. It’s special because I never thought I was suited for it, but it has turned out to be the role I’ve sung the most.

Opera requires both vocal and dramatic skills. How do you prepare for a new role — do you start with the music, the character, or something else?

I definitely start by reading the plot. Then, I move on to the music. For the character, I try to refer to what the composer wrote in the score. Some composers write everything down; there’s no need to invent anything.

Looking ahead, is there a dream role or a specific opera you haven’t performed yet that you’d love to take on in the future?

Yes, certainly, Arturo in Bellini’s I Puritani.

Best place in the world to find inspiration for you?

In the arms of those you love… Those who love you and love you back are the best source of inspiration for everything.

Marco, grazie mille per molto interessanti respondi!
